Jitender Singh Shunty | Bio

Jitender Singh Shunty is a former BJP-Akali Dal MLA from Shahdara constituency in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. He is a senior leader of the BJP-Shiromani Akali Dal.

Jitender Singh Shunty has voluntarily donated blood 100 times and counting. He is also known as “Donor Singh”. He is the first Sikh in the world to achieve this. He is the founder of prominent NGO Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal (SBS Foundation).

The NGO was established with the objective of saving lives through promoting availability, accessibility and effectiveness of emergency services in the developing world. With its head office in New Delhi, India, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal works in more than 5 states of India.

Sewa Dal’s approach is guided by its vision of a world where everyone avails basic emergency services and no one is denied of their last rites, in which services are provided for the benefit of all. In Delhi (India), Sewa Dal started its work during 1997. Sewa Dal is focused on leveraging changes to contribute to efficient emergency services, disaster preparedness and last rites for all affluent and unprivileged sections of the society. The strategy focuses on four areas of work in particular where Sewa Dal has recognized expertise.

Emergency Services: Providing Free of Cost Ambulance Services to the general public

Blood Donation: Organizing voluntary blood donation camps and providing free of cost blood to the needy patients

Management of the Dead

Free of charge Cremation of underprivileged and unclaimed Corpses, Free of cost Hearse-van (Corpse Van) service to carry the corpses to their final destination and Refrigerated Mobile Morgue Box for short term preservation of corpses.

Disaster Management

The NGO has successfully executed disaster relief operations in various natural disasters. The Disaster Management Cell of the NGO extended humanitarian services in the following disasters by providing food items to the survivors and victims, reinforcing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Services and aiding rescue work:

  • Nepal Earthquake (2015)
  • Chennai Floods (2015)
  • Kerala Floods (2018)

Saving Environment (Anti-Pollution Campaign) - Sadbhawna Cycle Yatra Under the able guidance of Jitender Singh Shunty, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal celebrates the Indian Republic Day with its Pollution Free ‘Sadbhawna Cycle Yatra’ on 26th January – Republic Day. Around 1000-1500 cyclists take part and collectively take out a rally in the NCT of Delhi raising environmental concerns and promoting patriotic zeal. "The amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is already above the threshold that can potentially cause dangerous climate change. We are already at risk of many areas of pollution... It's not next year or next decade, it's now.“ Main motive is to promote and motivate people for pubic transport and use of cycles, encouraging voluntar contributions of giving-up vehicular use as much as possible. It preaches – “Drive if you must”. The rally begins after flag hoisting and covers the prominent areas of Delhi. Cyclists join in huge numbers to support the noble cause of the NGO and rally is welcomed by RWAs and common people at several places with flowers, garlands, sweets & snacks for the cyclists and Sewa Dal volunteers. As the Rally symbolizes patriotism, it brings all the people together in oneness to celebrate the Republic Day caring for the ‘Environment’.


National “Sadbhawna Diwas” Event-


Under the able guidance of Jitender Singh Shunty, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal organizes National Sadbhawna Diwas every year having viewership of about 20,000 to 25,000 spectators to commemorate the birth anniversary of Martyr Bhagat Singh and . Conferring Shaheed Ae Azam Bhagat Singh National Sadbhawna Award to the people having made exceptional contributions for the societal benefit, the NGO paves way for and motivates social activists to step forward and contribute to the social causes. Early Life:


Jitender Singh Shunty was born on 1 August 1961in Delhi. He is the youngest child of Late S. Pritpal Singh Sabharwal and Late Mrs. Jagbir Kaur. In siblings, he has an elder brother and an elder sister. His father got paralyzed in 1979 due to which he had to discontinue further studies and start devoting time to work at motor-part business at their shop at Delhi-UP Border. His father expired in 1981 due to which responsibilities came onto his shoulders to run the motor part business. He ran this shop and business at Delhi-UP Border from 1979 till 1989. Then on 29th January 1989 he started a business of sale and purchase of pre-owned and new cars in the name of Fair Deal Car Palace in D- Block Vivek Vihar Shaheed Bhagat Singh Market. He became the president of the market association and ran this car dealing business till 2007. In 2007 he turned up to the Real Estate Sector and since then he is into Sale and Purchase of Properties, Collaboration and liaising. Marriage and Family J.S Shunty got married to Manjit Kaur in the year 1985 who belongs to Patiala Punjab. They have two sons namely Manish Pal Singh (elder son) who graduated in Mass Communication and has been into the business of Public relations and Event Management and Jyotjeet Sabarwal (younger son) who is a post-graduate in Disaster Management (MSc) from Coventry University (England) and has been working on School Safety and Disaster Preparedness in Delhi, India.


Political Rise

  • 1990 - In this year J.S Shunty was appointed as the Block Gen. Secretary of the Vishwas Nagar Block Congress Committee and was later promoted as the President of this block.
  • 1995 – In 1995, he was appointed and served as the Gen. Secretary of the Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress. Later this year, he was promoted and simultaneously appointed as the Joint Secretary in All India Youth Congress. Also, he became the in-charge of Orissa State Congress and the Observer of Uttar Pradesh State Congress.
  • 1996 – In this year J.S Shunty was appointed as the convener of the All India Congress Sewa Dal. In this year itself he was appointed as the Convener of Haryana State Congress and Bihar State Congresswhich he continued till the year 2000.
  • 2000 – In the year 2000, J.S Shunty became the Gen. Secretary of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee
  • 2003- In 2003 he left congress party and contested Delhi Legislative Assembly (MLA) election as an independent Candidate from Shahdara Assembly Constituency. He stood second securing 13238 votes where BJP bagged 3rd position
  • 2007 – In 2007 he contested Municipal Corporation of Delhi (councilor) elections as an Independent Candidate from Jhilmil Ward. He won the election securing 6301 votes and became Municipal Councillor from Jhilmil ward.

Further to his election as Municipal Councillor, he brought together all the Independently Elected Municipal Councillors across Delhi to form a group in the Municipal Corporation and named it is “Progressive Group”. J.S Shunty was elected by the said independent councillors to be the chairman of the group and thereafter he represented that group of independent councillors in the Town hall and the MCD. He held the following posts in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi during his elected term as Municipal Councillor:

  • Member of the High Powered Property Taxes Committee
  • Law and General purpose committee
  • Member Licensing and Tehbazari Committee
  • 2008 – In this year J.S Shunty joined BJP-Akali Dal Alliance and contested Delhi Legislative Assembly (MLA) election as BJP-Akali Candidate from Shahdara Assembly Constituency. He stood 2nd securing 37658 votes (lost by a slight margin of 1536 votes).
  • 2010 – Elected as Chairman of the Community Services Department in Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
  • 2012 – In 2012 he contested East Delhi Municipal Corporation (councillor) election as a BJP-Akali Dal Candidate from Jhilmil Ward. He won the election securing over 12000 votes and became Municipal Councillor again from Jhilmil ward.
  • 2013 - In this year J.S Shunty contested Delhi Legislative Assembly (MLA) election as BJP-Akali Dal Candidate from Shahdara Assembly Constituency. He won by securing 45364 votes and became MLA from Shahdara Constituency.
  • 2015 – Due to re-election of the Delhi Legislative Assembly in the NCT of Delhi J.S Shunty contested again from the same constituency (Shahdara), however, lost the election in the Aam Aadmi Party wave despite securing 46792 votes.

Awards and Accolades:

  • Angels for the dead- A documentary named ANGLES FOR THE DEAD has been made on the Social concerned activities being carried out by the organization spearheaded by Mr Shunty
  • This 30 min Documentary Film by A.V.S. Company named SHLOKAA Films Ltd. U.S.A. which had its Screening in 23rd March 2006 at India Habitat Centre, Delhi. This Film had won the award for being the best short Documentary at Zoie Film Festival, 2006, Georgia U.S.A. This ushered in an international fame to the organization.
  • Godfrey Phillips National Bravery Awards (formerly: Red and White Bravery Awards) is an activity of Godfrey Phillips India, instituted in 1990, by honoring courageous people in Indian society. The award purports to recognize the ordinary citizens who have selflessly performed extraordinary, little-known acts of physical bravery and social acts of courage, thereby setting an example for others to follow.
  • Mr. Jitender Singh Shunty (Founder) was honored with this 1999-2000 Gold Award for Exceptional Act of Social Courage at FICCI Auditorium Delhi.
  • NACO Award 2005- Awarded to Sh. J.S Shunty (Founder) for donating Blood consecutively for the 68thtime on humane grounds.
  • Shaheed International Award- Felicitated to the organization by the then Health Secretary of Govt. of NCT of Delhi in the month of June 2004 for collection of maximum Blood units by organizing Blood-Camps.

Recognition Award- Organization was honored with this award at the hands of the erstwhile Chief Minister of the Govt. of NCT of Delhi for Yamuna-Cleaning Project on dt: 02.06.2002. Bhagidari Award 2006- Awarded to the organization SBSSD run by J.S Shunty,by the then Chief Minister of the Govt. of NCT of Delhi on 24.02.2006 at Pragati Maidan Bhagidari Mela for excellence altruistic services being extended to the society by the organization. Delhi Police Award- For maintain peace, executing social services and community well being the Honorable Founder was consecutively honored thrice with this award. MEDIA ATTRACTIONS- The Indian media made special featured documentaries on the organization’s altruistic services being broadcasted on their special social-sector centered shows:- Zee News- PEHAL Star News- JAABAAZ Delhi Aajtak- Meri Kahaani Doordarshan- Akkhon Dekhi IBN7- City Journalist Furthermore, J.S Shunty has received over 500 different awards and prizes for his exemplary contributions to the society.
